Tim Holmes has produced 'Turning The Mind', the seminal new album by Maps.
"Finally, the decision to work with Death In Vegas mainstay Tim Holmes in the legendary Contino Rooms studio appears to have paid dividends, not least in the industrial, almost warehouse-like sound that engulfs 'Turning The Mind' practically from start to finish." Dom Gourlay, Contact Music
"'Turning the Mind' heralds a new Maps sound. In come synthesisers for guitars; there are nods to the dancefloor, angrier lyrics about "cocaine fury" replace melancholia and a general loss of innocence. This is all showcased to best effect on 'Let Go of the Fear' and the Flaming Lips-like 'I Dream of Crystal'". Dave Simpson, The Guardian
"James Chapman's 2007 debut album, the Mercury-nominated 'We Can Create', was a superior piece of nouveau-shoey, its analogue warmth making it sound like Spiritualized without the smack.
Second time around, he's upped his game. Maps' second album is less diffident, with Chapman stepping out of the aural shadows with clearer lead vocals, double-tracked for emphasis. 'Turning the Mind' is also more open and welcoming though it is still a complex and intriguing record you'll want to keep coming back to". Simon Price, The Independent
"Following up an album that was nominated for the Mercury Prize a couple of years ago, James Chapman has opted for the confessional and guitar-free approach.
Concentrating on dreamy washes of keyboard and driving melodies, 'Papercuts' and 'Love Will Come' exhilarate without getting excitable, while 'Nothing' develops from dreamy sequence into threatening nightmare. 'I Dream of Crystal' is engaging while erring on the side of self-righteous, but it is hard to resist the optimism of 'Die Happy, Die Smiling'". The Scotsman
